When someone tells me about a “platformer”, my first thought is that it’s probably a simple game that mainly revolves around running and jumping around, with a minimal plot. When Nokia and Microsoft announced a partnership last month, many systems and app developers interpreted the deal to mean Nokia was beginning to turn away QT Symbian and MeeGo platforms. In essence, Nokia would be dialing into Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 technology in the near future — and, it was presumed, dialing out of its own mobile OSes. Back when I was a kid, I used to love crafting ornate puzzle boxes out of Lego. There would be just one way to open the box, by carefully shifting and rotating a bunch of pieces. Microsoft’s Kinect, the fastest-selling gadget ever, has now been hacked to work with the PlayStation 3. The Kinect isn’t directly plugged into a PS3, though (that would be too awesome). Instead, it’s plugged into a conventional PC laptop, where PrimeSense’s first-party drivers are used to interface with Kinect. The Android Market is still missing a few key pieces of functionality. Among them is in-app payments — which Google has now announced will begin rolling out next week. The company is encouraging developers to upload apps that include in-app purchases, and instructions have been provided to walk submitters through the set-up and testing process. Sony is accusing alleged PlayStation 3 hacker George Hotz of surrendering two “non-functional” hard drives in violation of a court order, and then taking off to South America. But Hotz’s lawyer said Wednesday that Sony is “crying alligator tears” over the issue.
